Turn, Turn, Turn

To everything there is a season.
\nA time for war, a time for peace.
\nEcclesiastes, Hebrew Scriptures<\/p>\n
I wish I could say I thought of something profound as
\nI saw the president and his wife\u2019s picture on that
\nbillboard on Hwy 317 in my rear view mirror on my way
\nout of Crawford today. I will be back for the final
\nweekend farewell to Camp Casey on July 6th, but I
\nwon\u2019t be back as the owner of property there, or as a
\nleader of the American peace movement.<\/p>\n
The protests that were Camp Casey I and II that
\nevolved into the five acres on Hwy 317 (Lone Star
\nParkway), which was known as Camp Casey III,
\ndefinitely were effective and served a relevant
\npurpose in the national discourse of the pros and cons
\nof the war. In an occupation that was and still is
\nkept far from apathetic American eyes, summer \u201905 was
\none of the first times the cost of BushCo\u2019s Iraq
\nfiasco was made public and many people sympathized and
\nresonated with and some even traveled for miles to be
\nwith the Mom in the ditch.<\/p>\n
When I announced that I was going to put my five acres
\nup for sale in Texas, the horrible anti-peace;
\nanti-American group, Move America Forward announced
\nthat they would buy it to erect a \u201cMemorial.\u201d This
\ngroup still cheer-leads and supports a war where our
\ntroops are clearly being misused and mal-treated by
\ntheir civilian leadership and celebrates each death as
\na sacrifice for the neo-con, obscene, and Orwellian
\nidea of \u201cfreedom.\u201d Move America Forward is still
\ncollecting money for their memorial, which will never
\nbe built on my old property and if they really wanted
\nto buy it, they wouldn\u2019t have sent out a press
\nrelease—they just wanted a few more minutes of fame
\noff of my misery!<\/p>\n
Into all of the drama, radio talk show host Bree
\nWalker enters. She could not bear the thought of Move
\nAmerica Forward or any other right-wing fascist group
\nbuying Camp Casey, so she cashed in her corporate
\nbuy-ins and bought my land to leave as a legacy to
\npeace—and a true memorial to our children and the
\npeople of Iraq who have been killed for corporate and
\npolitical greed. Bree is putting her money where her
\nmouth is, too, and we Camp Casey-ites were relieved
\nand overjoyed when she purchased it!<\/p>\n
I was in Crawford this past week to transfer the deed
\nto Bree and to take care of some last minute business.
\nSelling my land and kicking the Crawford dirt off of
\nmy flip-flops was bittersweet. I have had some of my
\nhighest-highs in that \u00bd horse town, but also some of
\nmy lowest lows.<\/p>\n
August \u201905 was the happiest, yet the 2nd most
\nstressful time of my life. The people who saw my
\nsunburned face, wild hair and chapped lips every time
\nthey turned on their TV never saw me tossing and
\nturning in my tent or trailer on a nightly basis
\ntotally stressed out about the Rovian smear campaign
\nand worrying about what lies were going to be told
\nabout me, or what attack was coming next. It seemed
\nlike everyone with an agenda from \u201cIsrael is the
\nculprit\u201d to \u201c9-11 was an inside job\u201d flocked to
\nCrawford to have a moment in the blazing hot sun with
\nme. Soldiers came from Ft. Hood to secretly be in
\nsolidarity with me and parents of live and dead
\nsoldiers also came: Mostly to stand in solidarity with
\nme, but some to try and take Camp Casey over to mold
\nit to their own agendas.<\/p>\n
I fell in love at Camp Casey and had my heart broken
\nagain there. I found true friends and learned how to
\ndistinguish between true friends and people who only
\npretend to be your friends until your usefulness to
\nthem is over. I smiled more than I frowned; I laughed
\nmore than I cried; I danced badly and sang out of
\ntune; I received more love than animosity and I think
\nthousands of us were given renewed hope and energy
\nbecause Camp Casey existed.<\/p>\n
I will always be grateful for this experience that did
\nhave an intense and positive effect on the world but I
\nam also content I have chosen a new direction and can
\nrest easily in the fact that we did do good. It\u2019s time
\nfor someone else and something else to manifest itself
\nin Crawford and time for some of us to ride into the
\nbeautiful Texas sunsets that I definitely will miss.<\/p>\n
I think when one is heading in the wrong direction, it
\nis always prudent to change direction—even if you
\nhave to pull over and ask the way to go, and very
\nimprudent to stay a ridiculous and mistaken course.<\/p>\n
I want to thank everyone for the outpouring of love,
\nsupport, and financial support that has come my way
\nsince my resignation from the peace movement. My
\nmedical bills will be paid off and because of Bree\u2019s
\ngenerosity, I have a financial cushion to help me on
\nto the next phase: helping humans who have been hurt
\nby US corporate imperialism. I want to also thank
\neveryone who has helped me along the way so far and
\nencourage people to stay their courses if they think
\nthey are being productive and supported.<\/p>\n
The millennia old season of war is getting tiresome
\nand while never good, is growing in evilness as the
\npeople who run the wars become more corrupt, callous
\nand as far removed from their conflicts as they can
\npossibly get.<\/p>\n
There is a season for peace—I hope for all of our
\nsakes we reach it soon.<\/p>\n
