\nThe Administration and Campus Security must respect

Retired Chicago Police Officer Leon Bowens, now a
\nSecurity Officer at Chicago\u2019s Harold Washington
\nCollege, forcibly dragged two students out of a Nov. 9
\njob fair for the crime of asking questions.<\/p>\n
Students opposed to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan
\nattended the job fair concerned that students are not
\ngetting the full story about military enlistment from
\nrecruiters increasingly desperate to counter quota
\nshortfalls. We attended the fair holding no banners
\nor signs, and simply asked polite questions of the
\nrecruiters about the likelihood of being sent to war,
\nthe oft-promised benefits, and so on.<\/p>\n
We were so polite in our questioning that one
\nrecruiter defended us when campus security told us to
\nleave, saying, \u201cThey\u2019re not bothering me at all. They
\ncan stay, they\u2019re fine.\u201d When we started videotaping
\nOfficer Bowens’s threats to us, he grabbed the camera,
\ntelling us to turn it off. We managed to wrest it
\naway from him, so he dragged the student cameraman,
\nJenell Holden, out of the job fair by his bicep.<\/p>\n
Next, Security Officer Leon Bowens and his assistant
\nHerbert Wilson went for Chicago City Colleges student
\nAngie Haban, each grabbing her by an arm, and dragged
\nher out of the job fair, into the hallway, and out the
\nback door onto the loading dock, meanwhile elbowing
\nher in the chin. She sustained bruises to her left
\nupper arm.<\/p>\n
This outrageous manhandling of individuals engaged in
\npolite conversations is part of a broader and
\nlonger-term campaign of belligerence and intimidation
\ntoward anti-war students wishing to organize and
\nexercise their freedom of speech. On several other
\noccasions Security Officer Leon Bowens has violated
\nour constitutional rights to freedom of speech and
\nassembly, breaking up innocuous, informal
\nconversations in student lounges, tearing down and
\ndestroying approved fliers, and calling the police on
\nus while we were passing out leaflets in front of the
\nbuilding.<\/p>\n

\nfor his unprovoked assault of Angie Haban and Jenell
\nHolden at the 11\/09\/05 job fair. We will not
\nsurrender our first amendment rights! No more attacks
\nagainst students!<\/p>\n
