As the author and registered owner of this site, his purpose is to preserve an important slice of the history of the grassroots peace movement in the US over the past decade. He is maintaining this historical archive as a service to the greater peace movement, and to the many friends of Traprock Peace Center. Blogs have been consolidated and the calendar has been archived for security reasons; all other links remain the same, and virtually all blog content remains intact.

THIS SITE NO LONGER REFLECTS THE CURRENT AND ONGOING WORK OF TRAPROCK PEACE CENTER, which has reorganized its board and moved to Greenfield, Mass. NORTH CAROLINA STATEWIDE STUDENT ANTIWAR MEETING

Calling all student peace & antiwar activists in North Carolina!

NORTH CAROLINA STUDENT ANTIWAR PLANNING MEETING

Sunday, December 15
12:00 Noon - 3:00 PM
Curry Building, UNC-Greensboro
Hosted by the Campus Antiwar Coalition at UNCG
Website: http://GreensboroAntiwar.org/event.htm
Email: network@greensboroantiwar.org

AN URGENT CALL

The Bush administration's war drive shows no signs of slowing down.
Regardless of the findings of the weapon's inspectors, we believe that
the US war machine will soon be raining death on Iraqi people. The new
war (there has been an ongoing war on Iraq in the form of the sanctions
and routine bombings of "no-fly zones") could begin within a matter of
weeks.

We must not-we WILL not-be taken by surprise!

In opposition to the war, students and campus activists have begun
mobilizing in various cities around the country. North Carolina is no
exception. Teach-ins, rallies, "die-ins," antiwar concerts and meetings
have taken place on virtually every major college campus in the state.
Regional and national networking among these various groups of activists
is not only necessary, but urgent. Such a network will help us
coordinate our work and plan collective actions such as student
walkouts, protests, conferences, etc. We feel that such networks can
only emerge out of a meeting of the activists themselves, in a
democratic, grassroots manner; i.e., from the bottom-up.

STATEWIDE STUDENT MEETING

This is why the Campus Antiwar Coalition (http://greensboroantiwar.org)
at UNCG voted this week to host a brief planning meeting on December 15,
to initiate and facilitate cross-campus dialogue and networking across
the state.

We would like this meeting to prepare the groundwork for the creation of
a democratically-founded, grassroots campus network in order to better
coordinate our actions and events.

WHY A STUDENT NETWORK?

There are a number of community-based peace and justice groups in
different cities, which are doing important work in building opposition
to the war. We encourage and support similar networking efforts amongst
them. In particular, we would like to encourage these groups to send
their representatives to the statewide planning meeting being organized
by the Campaign to End the Cycle of Violence (CECV), in Chapel Hill,
Saturday, December 14 at 2:00pm. (Contact Andrew at 919-960-5217 or
Bridgette at 919-261-8611 for information and directions.)

We would also like to work together with these groups in joint activity
in the event of a war.

However, as students, we feel that a specifically student-based network
will greatly benefit the antiwar movement as well. The nature and pace
of campus activism requires such a network, so as to better coordinate
statewide student-run actions, such as sit-ins, protests, walkouts,
"dorm-storms" etc.

DETAILS OF THE MEETING

1. The meeting will be open to all student- and campus-based antiwar
groups, coalitions and activists. Everyone is invited to attend!
2. To facilitate fair and democratic decision-making process, we are
asking that each group elect/designate TWO representatives to vote on
any proposals that might be raised. This way, we can be sure that no
single group or campus dominates in the decision-making.
3. The meeting will be in Curry Building, UNC-Greensboro campus on
Sunday, December 15, from 12:00 noon to about 3:00 PM.
4. DIRECTIONS to the meeting will be posted on our website at
http://GreensboroAntiwar.org/directions.htm
5. To learn more about the meeting, to help plan for the meeting, or if
you have suggestions about the meeting itself, please email us at
network@greensboroantiwar.org
6. If you and/or your group would like to ATTEND, PLEASE EMAIL US
(network@greensboroantiwar.org) so we have a sense of how many people to
expect.
Visit our website often for updates and additions.
Hope to see you all there!
Stop the war on Iraq!
