grassrootspeace.org

November 5, 2007: This website is an archive of the former website, traprockpeace.org, which was created 10 years ago by Charles Jenks. It became one of the most populace sites in the US, and an important resource on the antiwar movement, student activism, 'depleted' uranium and other topics. Jenks authored virtually all of its web pages and multimedia content (photographs, audio, video, and pdf files. As the author and registered owner of that site, his purpose here is to preserve an important slice of the history of the grassroots peace movement in the US over the past decade. He is maintaining this historical archive as a service to the greater peace movement, and to the many friends of Traprock Peace Center. Blogs have been consolidated and the calendar has been archived for security reasons; all other links remain the same, and virtually all blog content remains intact.

THIS SITE NO LONGER REFLECTS THE CURRENT AND ONGOING WORK OF TRAPROCK PEACE CENTER, which has reorganized its board and moved to Greenfield, Mass. To contact Traprock Peace Center, call 413-773-7427 or visit its site. Charles Jenks is posting new material to PeaceJournal.org, a multimedia blog and resource center.

* Yesterday Nov. 20th, at 3:15pm 25 Students of New School University in the office of president of the school former Senator Robert Kerrey and sat down. They refused to leave his office at 66 west 12th St. NY until he agreed to hold a public forum to discus the impact Kerrey's extremely public pro-war stance is having on the New School community.

* Students began requesting to meet with Kerrey on Thursday November 14th. The president's office had thus far declined to schedule a meeting.

* Kerrey is a member of the Committee for the Liberation of Iraq (CLI). Kerrey serves on the committee with:
o George P. Shultz,
o Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.)
o Randy Scheunemann, CLI president, Trent Lott's former chief national-security adviser who last year worked in Donald Rumsfeld's office as a consultant on Iraq policy
o Bruce P. Jackson, CLI Committee Chairman, a former vice president of Lockheed Martin who chaired the Republican Party Platform's subcommittee for National Security and Foreign Policy when Bush ran for president in 2000

* At first Kerrey refused to schedule the forum and threatened to walk out of the office, but students made it clear that they would not leave until they had what they came for, a forum. When students began to take interviews by cell phone with the media Kerrey became noticeably upset and began to swear at the students and the media, but agreed to schedule the requested forum.

* As a result of this action Bob Kerrey will participate in a student organized public forum on December 4 at 1 pm in the Tishamn auditorium at 66 West 12th St.

* Students thanked Kerrey and peacefully left his office at approximately 3:45pm

* The New School was founded by pacifists during World War One and was expanded to include refugees from Nazi Germany during World War Two. It has along tradition of anti-war activity. In the face of the new schools anti-war past it is surprising that president Kerrey would use his position to promote war.

* The history of the new school states, "Members of the University community are committed to working toward a more equitable, peaceful world." http://www.newschool.edu/aboutnsu/content/fr_ata/history5c.html

* Students who participated in the action are available for interviews.
