Sept 7 – “Relief Not Combat” – CAN Speakout and Fundraiser for Katrina Victims

As part of a national day of campus actions demanding:

Money for Relief, Not for War!

Sponsored by the Campus Antiwar Network (CAN)

Bush is to blame for deaths of thousands in New Orleans.

We all watched in horror as so many people–mostly poor, mostly black–
were left for dead in New Orleans–tens of thousands without access
to food or water. But we also are outraged. We are outraged at the
lack of response from the Bush administration to this tragedy and we
are doubly outraged at the willful ignorance of the Bush
administration to the widely acknowledged danger that existed in New
Orleans. It had been predicted for some time that a category four
storm would hit the city, yet Bush cut funding for strengthening the
levies by 80%. Wetlands that surrounded the city for miles around
slowly vanished into the gulf at the rate of one football field every
quarter of an hour, yet Bush and his government did nothing.

Our response

We call on all students to speak out:

Wednesday, 2:00pm, between Bobst Library and the NYU Information
Center

The inaction of our government demands a serious response from the
student body. But this tragedy also demands immediate and effective
aid. This is why we are calling on students at campuses across the
country to speak out on Wednesday, and why CAN is organizing students
to travel down to New Orleans themselves to assist with the relief
effort.

Help us make relief immediate and effective. Let’s act now!
