College Not Combat Contingent: San Francisco
In the last few weeks, the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina has exposed the racism of a system that prioritizes a war based on lies over the safety of ordinary people at home. The reports of New Orleans residents being terrorized by the police and national guard while aid remains all but unavailable has angered a large section of this country. This sense of outrage has lead to the beginning of a reawakening of the antiwar movement. For this reason, the Campus Antiwar Network, has launched a “Relief Not War” campaign. Students are organizing relief actions on their campuses to show solidarity with dispossessed Gulf Coast residents. Additionally, the Louisiana Activist Network, a sponsor of the College Not Combat contingent, has set up camp outside of New Orleans and is organizing direct aid to hurricane survivors. Given the centrality of relief work to both groups’ activities and the connections between the war the the hurricane, exemplified by military recruiters in the Astrodome, the College Not Combat contingent will be renamed “College Not Combat, Relief Not War,” with the dual demands of military out of our schools and funding relief efforts instead of the war.
If you are interested in marching with College Not Combat, Relief Not War, please meet at 16th and Mission when you arrive in San Francisco. We will rally and then march to Dolores Park to join the rest of the demonstration. We also need megaphones and clipboards. Please consider what your group can volunteer. Information and Questions can be directed to Kristin at tigger482@gmail.com.

Imagine no possessions,
I wonder if you can,
No need for greed or hunger,
A brotherhood of man,
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world…
You may say I’m a dreamer,
but I’m not the only one,
I hope some day you’ll join us,
And the world will live as one
