The Five-College Antiwar Coalition and the Western Massachusetts AFSC organized a march/walk and indoor event for peace on Sunday, February 9th, in Amherst, Massachusetts. Beginning at 2 PM at the Haigis Mall on the UMass-Amherst campus, the march/walk moved east along Massachusetts Avenue and then proceeded south on Pleasant St. into the center of town. The marchers then moved to the Johnson Chapel on the Amherst College campus, where an indoor program began at approximately 2:30 PM. They were greated by music from activist singer-song writer Tom Nielson, who also ended the program with song. Speakers/presenters included Isis Nusair, a research assistant with the Five-College Women's Resource Center; students the Five Colleges gave updates on campus peace activism; Eric Wasileski, a Persian Gulf Veteran, member of the Traprock Peace Center Core Group and founding member of a local branch of Veterans For Peace, poet Magdalena Gomez; Sut Jhally of the Media Education Foundation; Michaelann Bewsee of Arise for Social Justice; Nick Camerota, International Action Center and college history teacher; Puerto Rican attorney and activist Rafael Rodriquez;. Joshua Jackson, student at Hampshire College, served at MC of the event. (We'll fix the audio of the students and Sut Jhally - we had technical difficulties with our batch of mp3's for them.). Poet Magdalena Gomez gave us permission to reprint her 'Writing to Remember' VIsit the page to read her words and to hear her presentation, which includes this poem. Thank you Magdalena. |
